Drive down to London Irish’s old home in Sunbury, past the conker trees and neat suburban houses, and wistfulness is hard to resist. Two big diggers are picking over the shattered remains of what used to be the Exiles’ main stand. Dandelions now grow in the in-goal area. For anyone who came here in the cheerful amateur days – when old-school correspondents would wipe holes in the condensation on the main bar windows to check the score – it really does signify the end of an era.
